Fibre to homes will pay for itself

2011-05-11

The Fibre Optic organisation announces that replacing old copper lines with fibre to the home pays for itself in time Telkom has always been the sole player in S. A. providing fixed-line Net access to customers outside of the more wealthy gated communities. If you are a business consumer, or a resident in one of the gated communities with a fibre partner, then you'll have the option of getting fibre into your building or home. Nonetheless most home shoppers do not have a cost effective or freely available option for fixed-line Internet access outside of Telkom's ADSL offering.

Telkom's ADSL services are delivered over their standard telefone copper substructure basically using bequest telephony network substructure to provide broadband services. ADSL has the drawback of speed degradation as the distance from the end-user to the exchange increases. In S. A.

this issue is extremely prevelant thanks to the states's long average local loop length. Copper also appears to be more engaging to burglars than fibre wiring, and it is widely known that Telkom loses millions due to copper burglary annually. Telkom has been disinclined to replace its copper local loop with fibre, exclaiming it's not cost-effective to do so as yet. But according to the boss of the Fibre Optic organisation ( FOA ) Jim Hayes, fibre-to-the-home ( FTTH ) replacements of copper networks pay for themselves in twenty years - just in the money saved on upkeep costs. He explained that FTTH has become economically possible because of the decrease in costs of fibre kit between the late 1990's and 2002 along with the lower maintenance costs of fibre in comparison to copper networks.

Hayes declared that passive optical networks reduce costs even more, and the additional advantage of having the ability to offer services like high definition video streaming and treble play offerings thru FTTH will also increase income over the long term.
