Google to digitize British library books

Google has made a deal with the Brit Library to make thousands of significant books available on the net. The deal, declared Monday, will let Net users read, search and copy two hundred and fifty thousand texts released between 1700 and 1870. The deal is applicable to works in the library's collection that are now not covered by copyright limitations. Google has similar deals with libraries around the globe. Its plan to put millions of copyrighted titles online has been opposed by the publishing industry and is the topic of a legal battle in the U. S. . The UK Library has a collection of 14,000,000 books and virtually 1,000,000 regulars. Last year it claimed plans to digitise up to 40,000,000 pages of papers harking back 3 and a half centuries.
