Tracking code removed from MSN

2011-08-23

Microsoft said the removal of the code in an article on eighteen Aug 2011, the same day that analysts printed info disclosing that MSN and 3 other Microsoft internet sites host JavaScript code that was capable of identifying users even after they'd removed their cookie cache from their drive. The code, which was copyrighted in 2007, stored itself in a browser's cache folder, and contained 2 separate techniques of identifying users. The 1st technique employed a machine unique identifier ( MUID ) as well as directions on the way to recreate the file in the event the cookie cache has been cleared. The second methodology included the MUID in an ETag, which was also stored in the cache. "We don't actually know what they were doing with this info, but it is not clear what this reason would be," related Jonathan Mayer, a graduate student in Stanford University's PC science office.
